Play seems to be an important theme in my life right now. As I was going through my own journals, I came across the following passage and felt compelled to share this playtime experience with you today.
Noah and I playing with side walk chalk while on vacation in San Diego.

Noah and I have spent a lot of time lately drawing with sidewalk chalk on the driveway. I love that we can spend time outside playing and creating together!
We have drawn pictures of paintings, an underwater scene with fish and anemone, aliens and spaceships (The aliens were going to get R2D2 so we had to draw him in too.) Noah and I even made a spaceship large enough for him to get into.
Some days we mix our chalk drawings with a bucket of water and some paintbrushes. We simply make shapes and designs, wiggly lines and scribbles. Then add water with giant paint brushes. Noah enjoys watching the colors mix and sometimes – with enough water – disappear! Magic!
Play truly is magic.
From our own front drive we were able to explore the vast regions of space, dive into the deep blue sea, attend a high class art museum, and perform the “amazing disappearing butterfly” act.
We even had an audience – a vast array of ants interested in their new colorful environment. One large, black ant seemed particularly curious about a patch of wet, orange chalky mush. Noah announced him as our new friend and confidently declared his name to be “Bumblebee.”
New friends, new adventures and in the end a newly designed pair of tie dyed socks : )
note to self: next time take socks off before playing with chalk!
